Lyrics

Every morning I shake hands with the universe, share a mutual wink with the cosmos. Life holds onto the dream of itself and celebrates. When music blew over me in the North Carolina Smokey Mountains, I tried my best to listen. Writing is like discovering what you’ve known all along, a tune you’ve been humming that suddenly has words.

We all discover how to be in the world through the hell that befalls us or the high water that surrounds us. We are challenged to reconcile our differences in the American community. Down Cullowhee way, half past Caney Fork, my extended family treat one another like they treat the land. There is a Native American saving: Treat the earth well. It was not given to you by your parents. It was loaned to you by your children.

Music is a way of counting your blessings. In September 2009 we recorded Julianna. In October 2010 we finished Goodbye, Rodeo. In between were moments of inspiration, exasperation, and penniless wondering. This album is here because I am blessed with the company of loved ones, friends, and sterling musicians who walked the banks of Moses Creek with me.

We carry time in different ways. The watches we wear replicate sundials. They map the real light and shadows, the arc of wonder that crosses the land. For now, I’ll measure out the day with a cup of coffee and a handshake. Here’s to the friends I have and the friends I have yet to meet.

Peace and blessings to all.
